Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will unveil a statue of former All India Congress Committee general secretary G.K. Moopanar at Kumbakonam on July 3.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu told newspersons here on Tuesday that Union Minister of Shipping G.K. Vasan and Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin would participate in the function, besides local party MPs and MLAs.
Congratulating Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on successfully conducting the World Classical Tamil Conference in Coimbatore, Mr. Thangkabalu said the State unit of the party would take up with the Centre the demands made at the conference.
He thanked the Chief Minister for conceding a majority of the demands made by him at the conference.
Reacting to the hike in prices of petroleum products, Mr. Thangkabalu said the Centre was forced to take the decision.
The Finance Minister had already allayed apprehensions that the price increase would fuel inflation and assured that any increase in prices of essential items would be absorbed in the course of time.
He dubbed the bandh called by the Opposition as a move to gain political mileage
